The EAST MOUNTAIN ARTISTS SERIES welcomes you to its 2006-2007 season of classical music and invites you to delight in the artistry of familiar favorites as well as fresh faces. With the opening concert in September, EMAS embarks on its 11th year of presenting diverse music concerts for the enjoyment of the community, and continues to fulfill the vision of its founder, pianist and educator Monique Le Duc, an East Mountain resident since 1989. Ms. Le Duc serves as Program Director for the Series and also performs with The Sierra Trio, EMAS Artists–in–Residence. Joining her in The Sierra Trio are violinist Margaret Hawn, performer and string teacher, and cellist Kristin Hawn, with a recently–completed degree in cello performance.
The EAST MOUNTAIN ARTISTS SERIES was founded with the mission of bringing outstanding classical music to the East Mountain community, and we rely on your financial support to maintain this tradition of quality. Please consider a season subscription or a generous contribution to help us continue attracting talented performers to our stage. EMAS is a not-for-profit organization, so your contributions are tax-deductible.
Our concerts are held on Sundays at 3:00 pm, at the Mountainside United Methodist Church in Cedar Crest, which is located at 4 Penny Lane, west off Highway 14, and 3/4 mile north of I-40 (Exit 175). Our thanks to the church for the use of their fine facility.
We are pleased to provide concertgoers with free refreshments and childcare.
Pianist Monique Le Duc and violinist Margaret Hawn from The Sierra Trio offer a concert of treasured sonatas to open the EMAS 2006-2007 Season. On the program are Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 in D Major, Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire, and Edvard Grieg’s Sonata No. 3 in C Minor.
Exceptional pianists David Curtin and Hyun Ju return to perform works for four hands. David presented a solo concert for EMAS in October 2003, and a joint concert with Hyun Ju, his wife, in February 2005. Both artists are music educators and have performed extensively in the US and abroad.
Have you ever wondered where they are now…the talented young musicians who have performed at the EMAS Youth Concerts, then graduated and moved on to develop their potential? We’ve wondered too, so join us as we welcome back several gifted vocalists and instrumentalists to charm us once again with their maturing musical skills.
Quintessence, Choral Artists of the Southwest, presents a concert for the holiday season, featuring Victoria’s Ave Maria, Poulenc’s Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noel, various modern compositions on ancient texts, and a collection of Christmas spirituals. Most of the program is performed a cappella, with occasional touches of percussion and piano. Quintessence celebrates its 20th year this season, and its 17th under the direction of maestro Michael Cooke.
The outcome is always remarkable when a guest artist joins The Sierra Trio. Expect an entertaining and engaging listening experience as Monique Le Duc, Margaret Hawn, and Kristin Hawn invite gifted violinist Rachel Hawn to join them on stage for a concert of favorite piano quartets.
The critically acclaimed Brass Roots Trio takes its audience on a musical journey from baroque to opera to jazz. The threesome — pianist Rosetta Senkus Bacon, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Travis Heath, and tenor and horn player Douglas Lundeen — offers an eclectic mix. Individually and in ensemble, the three musicians have demonstrated their prodigious talents across the United States and around the world.
EMAS once again presents an appealing array of young performers displaying their instrumental and vocal skills. Take pleasure in the impressive musical talents of students ranging from elementary age up to high-schoolers.
The comfort of an old friend and the curiosity of something new are both within the experience of this recital. Rachel will play classics that never get old, while Matthew introduces exciting contemporary composers such as Joseph Schwantner. Then hear violin and marimba combined. Rachel, a frequent EMAS performer, earned her Master’s degree in violin performance, and her husband Matthew, new to EMAS, earned his Master’s in percussion performance.
EMAS continues its tradition of beautiful music on Mother’s Day, with an opportunity to enchant that very special lady. Monique Le Duc, Margaret Hawn, and Kristin Hawn blend piano, violin, and cello for a delightful afternoon of trio classics in this season’s final concert.
